FADE IN:
EXT. HOUSE — NIGHT
A MAN wearing dark clothes and a backpack is crouched down along the side of a house. The shadows obscure his face.
He takes a camera and a long lens out of the backpack. He attaches the lens to the camera before moving towards a window.
Inside the window is a bedroom. A couple are lying on the bed having sex. The man approaches the window and points his camera inside. He adjusts the lens before furiously snapping photos of the couple inside.
INT. LIVING ROOM — DAY
EMILY, a slim brunette in her early 30’s, is sitting on the sofa reading a magazine. The sound of the door opening and someone entering the house can be heard offscreen.
EMIly
Tom, is that you?
Tom, a man of average build with dark rimmed glasses and wispy hair, pokes his head around the corner into the living room.
Tom
Were you expecting someone else?
Emily smiles.
EMILY I guess not.
Tom
Close your eyes, I have a surprise for you.
EMILY
A surprise? What are you up to?
Tom
I can’t say, it’s a surprise. Just close your eyes.
Emily sighs and closes her eyes. Tom walks over carrying a box. He sits down on the sofa beside Emily holding the box out in front of him.
Tom
Alright, open your eyes.
Emily opens her eyes and looks down at the box in surprise.
EMILY What’s this?
She takes the box from Tom and opens it to reveal a book.
EMILY
What is this for?
Tom
It’s to show you how much I love you.
Emily holds up her left hand to show an engagement ring on her ring finger.
EMILY
(laughing)
You already asked me to marry you,
I think you’ve made it pretty clear how you feel about me.
Tom
Well, I guess this is just a reminder. I love you Emily.
They share a quick kiss and then Tom gets up off the sofa.
Tom
I think we still have some wine.
I’m going to grab some for the two us.
EMILY
Well, you’re just pulling out all the stops today, aren’t you?
Tom walks into the kitchen. A few moments pass before Emily’s cell phone buzzes on the coffee table.
Emily picks up the phone and opens it. Someone has sent her a photo of a man and woman having sex. As she’s looking at the photo the person sends another picture. She opens the second photo. The second picture is zoomed in on the woman’s face. The woman in the photo is Emily.
Tom returns to the living room holding two glasses of wine.
He notices Emily who looks visibly disturbed as she stares at her phone.
Tom What’s wrong?
Emily is snapped out of her trance by Tom’s remark but is still visibly shaken.
EMILY
Nothing. No, everything’s fine. I’m just going to run to the toilet quickly.
Tom Alright.
Emily hurries out of the room.
INT. TOILET — DAY
Emily enters and closes the door behind her. She looks at her phone again and sees a new message.
The message reads: “I want $20000 or I’m telling your fiancé.”
Emily leans against the door and closes her eyes, fighting back tears.
She goes back into her phone and opens up her contacts. She scrolls until she reaches the name “Ethan” and taps on it, opening up a text chat.
She sends a text that reads: “We need to talk.”
INT. ETHAN’S APARTMENT — DAY
A knock on the door is heard. ETHAN, a tall muscular man in his mid 20’s enters the frame and opens the door to reveal Emily.
ETHAN
Hey, it’s good to see you.
Emily blows by him and enters the apartment. Ethan closes the door behind her.
ETHAN
Is everything okay? You seemed pretty upset on the phone.
Emily turns to face Ethan.
EMILY
No, everything is not okay.
Emily pauses.
EMILY
Ethan, someone knows about me and your mate Brad!
ETHAN
What? How? Who knows?
EMILY
I don’t know. But the last time we were together, when we were at his place!
ETHAN What?
Emily takes out her phone. She opens it to the photos and hands the phone to Ethan. He looks at the phone in shock.
ETHAN
Jesus! Who the Hell would do that?
EMILY
I don’t know. But whoever it is wants twenty thousand dollars or else they’re going to tell Tom.
Ethan is silent, deep in thought.
EMILY
Ethan, I know this is a lot to ask but…
ETHAN
What, you want me to give you the twenty thousand?
Emily starts to cry.
EMILY
There’s no way I can come up with that kind of money. I’ll pay you back, I swear. I just don’t want Tom to find out about this. I love him and I can’t hurt him like that.
ETHAN
So you’re really going to stay with him?
EMILY
He’s a good man Ethan. You know I care about him and I want to marry him.
EMILY
Will you help me out with this? Please?
EXT. STREET — NIGHT
Emily is walking down a quiet street. She checks her phone and finds a message.
The message reads: “Go to 113 james St. Leave the money in the mailbox.
Emily continues down the street until she reaches a house with “113” on the outside. The house is clearly abandoned. She takes out an envelope and opens the mailbox. She places the envelope inside the mailbox, then closes the mailbox and quickly walks away.
A few moments pass and then a man walks out from behind the bushes. The darkness obscures this face as he approaches the mailbox. He opens the mailbox and removes the envelope. The man opens the envelope to find a large amount of money inside.
As the man walks away he steps in a patch of light for a brief moment. The man is Tom.
FADE TO BLACK.
